Aloft Hotel

Loadbearing Light Steel Framing & X-Braced Shearwalls

Wilmington, North Carolina

Located along the downtown Wilmington Cape Fear River front you will find a new Aloft Hotel adjacent to the Coastline Convention Center. As of October 2020, the project is over half-way complete and its current expected opening date is Spring 2021.

The Aloft Hotel is over 80k sq feet and 124 rooms. This 7-story project was originally designed as load-bearing cold-formed steel studs with precast plank. The Steel Network completed a design assist on the project, switching the load-bearing Standard C-Studs and standard t-tracks to SigmaStud® and SigmaTrak®. With SigmaStud’s unique configuration and additional bends, this proprietary member allowed the load-bearing wall studs to handle increased axial loading, allowing for the project to be built stronger and faster. Additionally, SigmaTrak facilitated full bearing at the top and bottom track, eliminating the typical “gap” between stud and track when load-bearing c-studs bear on the corner radius of the t-track.

The project was panelized off-site by Lyle Contracting Solutions and panels were transported to the jobsite for quick installation. Lyle Contracting Solutions video-taped the entire process of panel installation with a professional construction camera, and the result is mesmerizing! See for yourself how streamlined it was for installers on the Aloft Hotel in Wilmington to install the load bearing panels of SigmaStud® and SigmaTrak®, combined with a hollow-core plank floor/roof system.

Year Built

“TSN’s understanding of the prefabrication process and their ability to cut to exact lengths and bundle material by panel was a game changing in allowing us to meet the demanding panelization schedule for this project.”
