The Steel Framing Industry Association (SFIA) has released up-to-date guide specifications for cold-formed steel (CFS) construction, and introduced two essential commentaries that provide additional guidance on the application of specifications to the codes and standards used in most United States building jurisdictions.

The SFIA 054000 Cold-Formed Metal Framing, the SFIA 092216 Non-Structural Metal Framing and their respective commentaries*, available for free from the SFIA, are a set of tools for contractors, building owners, architects and structural engineers striving to deliver advanced framing systems and provide quality assurance and quality control on their projects.

SFIA Releases Updated Cold-Formed Steel Guide Specs

The latest SFIA Guide Specifications give architects and engineers a handy way to specify metal framing systems that meet the 2018 IBC.

4 Guide Spec Documents

The updated SFIA Guide Specifications are based on the 2018 International Building Code. Architects, engineers and contractors should check the respective commentaries if another version of IBC governs.

SFIA 054000 Cold-Formed Metal Framing

“SFIA 054000 Cold-Formed Metal Framing” is for use in the preparation of a project specification section covering cold-formed steel exterior wall studs, floor joists, trusses, ceiling and roof joists, and rafters.

  • Materials may be field installed, or shop fabricated and field erected
  • Studs may be either axially-load bearing or non-axially load bearing

SFIA 054000 Commentary

“SFIA 054000 Commentary” provides additional useful information, such as AISI S240-20 definitions, and clarification on the application of provisions and requirements of the codes and standards cited in the “SFIA 054000 Cold-Formed Metal Framing” guide specification.

SFIA 092216 Non-Structural Metal Framing

“SFIA 092216 Non-Structural Metal Framing” is for use in the preparation of a project specification section covering metal framing systems for interior non-load bearing walls, interior ceilings and exterior soffits.

SFIA 092216 Commentary

“SFIA 092216 Commentary” provides additional useful information, such as AISI S220-20 definitions and clarification on the application of provisions and requirements of the codes and standards (IBC 2018 references the 2015 version of AISI S220) cited in the “SFIA 092216 Non-Structural Metal Framing” guide specification.

“The SFIA Guide Specifications help engineers and architects to prepare specifications for the exterior metal stud walls, floor joists, ceiling grids, roof joists and rafters of their projects,” says Larry Williams, SFIA executive director. “These documents help them to stay up to date with the latest code provisions and requirements.”
